What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is system of medical treatment founded by Dr Andrew Taylor Still in the early 20th century, when conventional medicine of the time had failed to prevent the untimely deaths of his three children. Although often referred to as alternative medicine, osteopathy is grounded in a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology. The relationship between these – often referred to as structure and function - is a fundamental principle of osteopathy. If the structure is improved, then improved function is inevitable! Treatment focuses on optimising this relationship.

During an osteopathic treatment, manual therapy is applied to joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons etc. Osteopaths use a variety of techniques which can assist and support the body in relaxing tense and inflamed tissues and improving circulation and fluid movement. Such treatment can reduce pain, improve range of movement and be of general benefit to the patient’s wellbeing.

Problems that can be helped by osteopathic treatment:
- Back, neck, shoulder pain, etc
- Joint pain
- Tension headaches
- Reduction of arthritic pain
- Pain relief during pregnancy
- Sports injuries
- Relief from some of the symptoms of IBS, Parkinson’s disease, and other progressive or chronic conditions, ie fibromyalgia.
